What are the proper steps in setting up a new site in multisite?

What is the proper sequence in setting up a new site/admin on your multisite? I have just manually setup my first site and it appears that the files are not available to go to the dashboard or website. I have setup an A record.

I hope you are well today and thanks for asking the question.

You won’t need to setup any A record, what you need is to create a wildcard subdomain.

You won’t have any extra file if you create any subsite. As all the subsites will use same wordpress installation. Those are part of the same process.

Hey Ashok!

I figured out part of my problem. It was in the .htaccess file. But now, when I try to either go to a dashboard or visit the subdomain site that I have created, it takes me to my homepage and dashboard. Any thoughts?

Also, do I need to add an A record for each of my subdomains or are they covered by the wildcard?

You don’t need to add any A record. You just create a wildcard subdomain (*.yoursite.com) and point it to your multisite install, that’s it :slight_smile:

I think it’s still htaccess problem. What is your htaccess rule? Would you please paste here?

Appears to be working the same. Test sites dashboards and view go to main dashboard/site.

I have checked your site. It seems you have issue with wildcard subdomain. Did you create wildcard subdomain?

You just create a wildcard subdomain (*.yoursite.com) and point it to your multisite install, that’s it :slight_smile:

Please let me know. If you do so, please send me your cpanel login too.

I have a wildcard subdomain. I had just entered it in as a A record pointing to the IP address. Since your post, I have deleted it and setup again by adding a * subdomain (I know, it is the same thing). It still seems to be doing the same thing.

I thought I sent you the cPanel login in the last email. I will send again if you tell me to.

Ash,

I was not quite correct. I am able to add a site and go to the new site dashboard, but I am still unable to view the website.

I will attach the admin and cPanel logins and passwords in a ticket to you.

I believe the issue I was having is that I had added the sites while my .htaccess file was incorrect. After deleting them and readding, I can see them in the dashboard.

Hi Martin

I tried to add a wildcard subdomain in your cPanel, it gives me this error:

There was a problem creating the sub-domain: Domain already exists, it was not added.: *.kingdom-connections.org

Normally it means there is already a hidden subdomain created.

Would you please ask your host to delete that hidden subdomain?

Not sure I understand. Doesn’t the error message just confirm that the wildcard already exists? If you are wanting to delete the wildcard and start anew, can’t you just go into the Advanced DNS Setting withing cPanel?

And that is weird that you can see the welcome post.

Yes, the error message means the subdomain exists, but you can’t see that in subdomain list. I have deleted and added again DNS setting though and after that I am able to see the Hello World post.

Please ask your host that, you have pointed DNS to root, so why it’s not working in browser? They will let you know if there is any restriction in hosting server or if any extra setup is needed.

Sorry, I had a day off.

Right now I have tested again in your site with different configuration but it’s not working with even no plugin activated.

I have created wildacrd subdomain again, and it seems it’s not working properly.

You own a WHM, that doesn’t mean that you are the main host. You bought the package from somewhere else and they are able to configure everything in your in your hosting.

Please ask them with description that why your wildcard subdomain is not working. Give them a link of this thread,

Also, I have checked your error log, but there is nothing in your error log. This is not normal, your must have something in the error log. So, there is something wrong in the server setup (or was done intentionally).

So, if you please open a ticket to them and let me know what they say.

Ash,

I am so glad that you had a day off. You seem to be cranking out the help tickets lately.

I spent a lot of time with the domain service provider last night and they were not able to find any issues. I noticed that all of my plugins had been disabled and yet still not working (I thought my domain service provider had inactivated the plugins). With that, I decided to just reinstall WordPress and start over.

With only the WPMU dashboard installed, I am now able to add subdomain blogs and it appears to be working properly. I will add plugins at a slower pace to see if I can prevent my previous issue from cropping up.

Sorry to hear that you needed to reinstall. Let me know if you see any issue again like that.

I think there was a misconfiguration when you were using domain mapping, multi domain and pro sites. So test again and again when you install those plugins.
