[Smush Pro] Revert some of the controls for Smush

2

Wow – I really don’t like the new look and setup of Smush Pro. It feels like a completely different plugin, and I feel like control has been taken away from me by tucking settings away into a wizard. Not happy with the change.

    Hey Nathan Lyle

I hope this message finds you well.

Just to ensure we fully understand your feedback, is the main cause of concern that the wizard limits your ability to quickly access specific settings, or is it more about the overall layout and navigation feeling new?
If there are any particular features or controls you feel could be found more easily, then pointing to those would really help us pass along more precise feedback to the team.

We are keen to understand exactly what’s impacting your workflow, so we can improve the experience.

    Best Regards
    Aamir

      Hi Aamir Rather

I too have some issues with the new design. The idea of consolidating and simplifying the controls is great. Fewer pages and all the options and controls just a few clicks away is really good. The design however could be improved in a few areas.

      Hope the following may help:

      – The Smush dashboard now looks like a marketing page from your website. Way too much color and gradients, graphics, inefficient use of space and just too opinionated (not great from a white labeling perspective)
      – Toggle switches now use a very bright neon green. It’s harsh on the eyes.
      – The headings that separate sections could be more prominent. Thicker and a darker color. All the text is a bit thin and light. There is less visual hierarchy.
      – The user profile in the top right isn’t really necessary. It serves no purpose.
      – The notification center is a nice idea though I wish opening it didn’t shift the page content with it. Maybe also add a notification counter to the icon to indicate the number of unread notifications?

I apologize for not being more specific – my initial post was a knee jerk reaction in the middle of a day’s work flow. It had been a month or so since I’d had occasion to be in the settings for the plugin, and it felt like a smack to the face when I did so. Entirely different feel to it. My main functional issue is that previously, on one settings page, I was able to configure how I wanted the plugin to work. There were a number of checkboxes that I now can’t find an equivalent option for. Plus, despite my having the white label option enabled on my WPMUDEV plugin, there’s multiple branding with links to WPMUDEV on the Smush settings. Including the logo at top left, the “WPMU DEV” button toward top right, along with the multiple other icons like support, etc. that lead to your site. This didn’t feel like an upgrade, it felt like a replacement. Like someone used Claude to code a new version from scratch.

following up… I found some of what I was missing in the separate settings page (one primary setting I always enabled was the “disable scaled images” option.)

I’m assuming this new version doesn’t actually remove any main functions of the previous version? I don’t know if there’s issues there yet that will stand out for me. But, while I’m used to things getting tweaked in new versions, this was just so jarring. It’s like back when Adobe changed their UI approach. It went from being a solid program to something that felt like a website java app. (Back at the beginning of their CC era.)

    Hello Nathan Lyle

Thanks for the information. I think you have some interesting points and I will share them all with our development team.

Regarding your question about missing settings, I understand that the UI is different and getting using to it may result in these situations. The setting you mentioned (among the rest of the settings from the Bulk Smush page in the older version of the plugin) should appear in the Smush Pro -> Settings -> Tools page.

    Kind regards,
    Jair.
