3.5 multi-site in sub-dir

Can someone explain to me about this new option of being able to install multisite in a subdir? This sounds really good to me because, unless I misunderstand, this allows me to have my main website totally segmented and independent, say, a network implementation and hosting offering that I may wish to offer. Is this true? Is that the benefit of putting the multisite in the subdir?

Also, what about those of us who already have multisite set up? Will I be able to undo my set up and essentially move the multisite aspect to a subdirectory?

One more question… let’s say my site xyz.com has multisite installed in a subdir, like: xyz.com/multisite… When my customers buy a site package in my network, will their site url be customersite.xyz.com like before or xyz.com/multisite/customersite ?

    Hi there,

Great question! I am wondering the same thing and I suppose I won’t know for sure until I try it, but from everything I’ve read, if you install in a subdirectory, you will have a subdirectory install. The answer, then, to your last question, is the latter, xyz.com/multisite/customersite.

As for moving your site, it shouldn’t be a problem. It would be like moving to a different server. The stuff in the database would be the same, except for the path and home urls and then you’d move the file structure.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you get stuck somewhere. And have fun with the new 3.5!

    Cheers,

    Paul

If I do this though and I create the wp site in a subdir, then what about root? For example, if I installed wp in xyz.com/wphere/, would wp still work for xyz.com/index.php? Or would my home be here: xyz.com/wphere/index.php?

    Thanks,

    Tom

The idea behind this kind of setup is for those that wish to have wordpress separate from their main site install, So hitting xyz.com would take you to your main site hitting xyz.com/wphere/index.php would take you to your wordpress install.

However one thing you should be aware of domain mapping would not work in the scenario you propose.
